Green Coffee Bean Extract

This ingredient is derived from green coffee beans. The difference between ordinary coffee beans and green coffee beans is that green coffee beans have not been roasted. The roasting process greatly reduces the amount of chlorogenic acid in coffee beans. Chlorogenic acid is the main ingredient in coffee beans and is responsible for most of coffee beans’ effects; it is thought to have a number of health benefits for conditions including weight loss and diabetes. Because green coffee beans contain more chlorogenic acid, they are likely to cause more powerful effects than standard, roasted coffee beans.

Fat Burning

The caffeine in green coffee bean extract that is responsible for fat burning; it contributes to this area of weight loss by sending signals to the fat cells instructing them to start breaking down. Another way in which it contributes to fat burning is by stimulating the central nervous system to increase levels of epinephrine, also known as adrenaline, in the bloodstream. Increased levels of epinephrine is another way fat is burned because epinephrine travels through the bloodstream directly to fat tissues and orders them to start breaking down.

Metabolism Boosting

Green coffee bean extract is the ingredient in Thrive Patch that is responsible for metabolism boosting. There is a limited amount of clinical evidence available to suggest that caffeine, which is found in green coffee extract, can help boost metabolism. What caffeine does is it releases neurotransmitters, which are chemicals that send signals to communicate information throughout the brain and the rest of the body. Neurotransmitters are linked with increasing metabolism and it is thought that caffeine can cause metabolism to be boosted by anything from 3-11% by releasing neurotransmitters. There have been some studies that have produced greater results, though these studies have used concentrations of caffeine greater than the standard concentration you would find in diet pills – these higher doses are not recommended for regular consumption. Caffeine’s effects on metabolism are said to be less pronounced in obese people.

Clinical Studies On Green Coffee Bean Extract

Research on green coffee bean extract’s effects on weight loss is limited and not of a good enough quality. More evidence is needed in order to fully determine the effects of green coffee beans on weight loss. However, there have been a few clinical studies carried out on green coffee beans and some of them do show some promise.

There has been a study on caffeine’s effects on metabolism. This study specifically sought to determine the effects of caffeine on body temperature and energy expenditure. For this study 12 male participants were recruited. They all consumed 150ml decaffeinated coffee with or without 200mg caffeine. A number of different measurements were taken during the three hours after the participants had consumed the caffeine. The results of this study showed that those who had consumed caffeine had their metabolism boosted by 3-11%. The problem with this study, however, is the number of participants recruited and the fact that all participants were male; for optimum results more people are required and people should be of both genders.

This study was carried out to determine caffeine’s effects on insulin sensitivity in humans. A high sensitivity to insulin can lead to a number of conditions and obesity is one of them, so by lowering insulin sensitivity, you stand a lesser chance of becoming obese. Hypoinsulinemic-euglycemic glucose clamps were used in order to measure the insulin sensitivity of the 12 participants recruited for this study. The participants had either caffeine or a placebo administered intravenously for the duration of the study. By the end of the study it was found that caffeine can decrease insulin sensitivity by as much as 15%, as well as increasing levels of epinephrine by as much as five times. An increase in epinephrine levels is linked with fat burning.

A review was published in 2011 looking into the results of three clinical studies that had been carried out to determine the effects of green coffee bean extract on weight loss. It was found that green coffee extract was much more effective at instigating weight loss than any of the placebos that were used in the studies. Despite the somewhat positive results of the studies featured in the review, it was concluded that the studies themselves were not of the highest quality. It was also mentioned that more thorough research into green coffee’s effects on weight loss is needed before it can be recommended by doctors for use in weight loss products.

Side Effects Associated With Green Coffee Bean Extract

Green coffee bean extract contains caffeine, a central nervous system stimulant which is associated with a number of different side-effects. Some of these include dizziness, diarrhoea, increased heartbeat, nausea, vomiting and irritability. If it is taken at particularly high doses it can cause side-effects such as chest pains, anxiety and headaches. One of the main problems with caffeine is that it can easily become addictive. The human body can become quite tolerant to caffeine’s effects quite quickly. People who are already quite sensitive to caffeine have a higher chance of experiencing nausea, though this does tend to subside after a short while once the body has got used to the regular intake of stimulants.

Despite the fact that green coffee bean extract contains caffeine, according to WebMD, green coffee is generally considered quite safe. The site mentions that a limited number of clinical studies have been carried out on green coffee, though no serious side-effects were reported during any of those studies.

As for clinical evidence on caffeine’s side-effects, results are generally quite mixed. There is one study which found that caffeine can have a negative impact on sleep, while another only reported a number of mild side-effects, with none of the participants becoming addicted to caffeine then reporting withdrawal symptoms. The conclusion of this particular study was that the weight loss benefits of caffeine greatly outweigh the small chance of side-effects from it occurring. In other words, it is worth taking caffeine for weight loss because it is more than likely going to be beneficial to you. Side-effects experienced throughout the duration of this particular study were mild.
